As an artist-in-residence my house evolves in a very personal way with paint techniques and sculptural installations. I have been inspired to rekindle an idea that had been cooked-up in my kitchen years ago but left on a back burner.
Enchanted by folkloric use of good luck charms for the house, I have researched the ancient practice of feng shui, the Chinese art of placement, and found that it prescribes incorporating metallic and green hues and undulating forms to enhance the energy in what is deemed the "family & community" section of this dwelling. And so, years ago, I had sketched out on the borders of the walls, the marginal spaces in my kitchen, some symbols significant to me, using modified designs and coloration from The Book of Kells.
Celtic knots have been painted above the doorway, as if to secure our human connections. A gold leafed vessel with fruit and vine motif above the stove represents transformation, every day miracles, and securing our daily bread. Eventually lines will be added to thread together all the designs applied to each of the walls.
Bit by bit I shall work my way around this kitchen and add a pinch here and a dash there in an effort to inspire harmony in this room, my work-in-progress.
